Midway State Park has important historic, cultural and natural resources as well as access to the north shore of Chautauqua Lake offering public access to water related activities such as boating, fishing and water related tourism activities. The master plan was needed to ensure NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s (OPRHP) long-term vision for the rehabilitation and enhancement of the park and plan for the preservation and use of its resources. The park has three main recreation areas; the amusement park area, the picnic area and the waterfront area. These areas are interconnected by a system of roadways and pathways and are defined by the structures and buildings within them. Working closely with OPRHP, we provided a comprehensive master plan that addressed not only the interaction and necessary separation of the main recreation areas, but accounted for the history of the park, its natural resources, safety and circulation, financial feasibility, and principles of sustainability.
